FAITH AND THE WATERMELON

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. (Hebrew 11:6)

The other day I went to the market and I bought a watermelon. When it was cut open I tasted it and I discovered it was not as sweet as I had hoped it would taste. A few months back I had bought a full size watermelon and the taste was amazing. A full size uncut watermelon looks inviting; and the memory of the rich pink colour attracts us to buy the fruit.

You might wonder what a watermelon has got to do with the subject of faith as analyzed in Hebrews 11 verse 6. Well I will tell you. The verse above us tells us that when we decide to come to God we must believe that God is. The watermelon is one fruit that when it is in its uncut state the outside is still green. When you want to buy a whole uncut watermelon you have to trust the fact that the one you select will turn it to be like the uncut one displayed by the seller. Our faith walk with God is one that we must embark on with the belief that God is who he says He is.

It is this expression of faith in God that attracts reward to us who follow him. Let me ask you, when you have someone who follows you around with the intention of going all the way with you. The person tells you that come what may he will stand by you. The person clearly shows you that your mentorship is what he lives for. Who would you remember to show favour to when opportunity presents itself? I believe the answer is obvious. So how much more our God who says unequivocally that he rewards them that diligently seek him.

Notice the key words in the verse. “For he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” Diligence in our pursuit in following God is the attractive force that guarantees our reward. Beloved God is not one to be taken for a ride. Remember that God is not mocked. Whatsoever a man sows that is what he will reap.
